LEGO Rifter
Thanks for all the messages of support. Special thanks to Hilmar for tweeting it and CCP for adding it to the login screen. And yes, I'm the creator of the LEGO Rifter on cuusoo. We are currently close to 3800 supporters but we have a long way to go to reach 10,000. So, I'm reaching out to the CSM members, alliance leaders, and forums to try to get more support. And I'll be talking with CCP again about the future
To those who were at the 2012 EVE fanfest in Iceland, you probably saw the model on display. LEGO models don't like the mail so I'm glad it made it there in relatively one piece
I'd love to entertain some questions but here are a couple answers first of all
* Why is the Rifter white instead of rust colored? - Rust is a hard color to achieve in LEGO (they have orange, dark red, red, brown). Since I built this out of my own personal LEGO collection, I was limited by the number of colors and pieces I actually had. Since this is a prototype build, if it gets produced by LEGO, the colors can certainly be corrected at production
* Why did you make the Rifter? - I LOVE the ship designs of EVE Online. I'm not prejudiced for or against any faction ship. I had to create a ship that was iconic to the EVE universe, buildable in LEGO form, and pretty to look at from a non-EVE player perspective. I also wanted to create a ship that was minifig scale (IE - you can put a LEGO man in the cockpit). The Rifter matches those criteria
* The Rifter needs weapons! - Haha, yes it does. I'll leave that to the loving fanbase. Or maybe we can create hardpoints on the final product with swappable weapons.
* Will you build **insert my favorite ship/faction** ? - YES. But the list of ships is enormous and everyone has a favorite. I honestly do not know what will happen when we reach 10,000 supporters. This could be a one shot model, or we could create a line of LEGO ships. So, at the very least, we can hope to get one LEGO product. The next hope would be to get one ship from each major faction. The really lofty goal would be to get multiple ships from each faction. But which ships? I think CCP and I see eye-to-eye when I say that YOU should decide. At some point, we'll need to run a poll to see what ships are created. I have my personal preferences along with ideas of which ships simply could not be made in LEGO form
* The Rifter is 53m long; the Maelstrom is 1481m long - how can you build larger ships to scale with the Rifter? - The answer is simple - I can't. The reason I chose the Rifter is that I could create it minifig scale. To create larger ships, I will have to make them smaller and out of scale of the Rifter. This is known as midi or mini scale. This is certainly doable.
Thanks again for the support and please spread the word in your particular alliance. Sign up and support the product.. And post any questions/comments here. |

I laugh at the 97K views. I think 5K views are mine as I check it regularly and try to respond to comments posted on cuusoo. Those are definitely not 97K *unique* views. My real concern is that we've had 20K to 50K people online playing EVE at a time since CCP was awesome enough to post the login splash screen up which means that between 5 and 10% of people logging in to play are supporting it. Then again, you have to create an account on cuusoo to support it so I understand people's unwillingness. And not everyone is a LEGO fan. But its a huge opportunity for EVE to reach new people. Do it for CCP! Do it for EVE! |

CCP has been great at promoting this so far (login advert, facebook, tweeting, having the model at fanfest). I'm trying to drum up support as well. I appreciate all the help.
There are more things we can do to draw attention and while I won't even bother asking for an ingame LEGO Rifter, how cute would it be if you could have a miniature LEGO Rifter in your captain's quarters. Hmm, maybe I will mention it... |

Thelron wrote:One thing about that "how much would you pay for it" question... I don't know what the going rate on LEGO is these days (other than "yup, still expensive") but also even with the measurements I wasn't able to get a good sense of the scale of the thing... I'm assuming part of their "will we make it" review is to take the possibly-serious answers against what they'd sell that much plastic for... is there any way you can get Hilmar's permission to put that photo on the cuusoo site? It'd at least let those of us who'd like to give a proper answer (rather than just one meeeeeelion dollars! or some other nonsense) a better judge of what we're saying we might buy. Looking at the site and the dimensions, I know personally I underestimated both what it was and what I'd probably *have* to pay for it, and even though I'd rather it were a nice sensible Caldari ship I would find any ship really nifty.
We judge LEGO on a price per piece ration. It usually averages out to about 10 cents per piece. The smaller sets are usually more then ten cents per piece and the larger sets are usually less. This means that a small set may have around 70 pieces and cost $10 whereas a giant set may have 1200 pieces and cost $100. Amazingly enough, if you look at LEGO sets from 20 years ago, the price to piece ration is about the same. The difference is that the overall piece count was usually MUCH less. A giant set from 20 years ago could have like 400 pieces and therefore cost around $45. LEGO just adds a lot more detail these days. The minifig has also had some upgrades. Gone are the days of simple smiley faces. Now they have custom heads and specialized unique printing. This adds up.
I'm not sure how much the "how much would you pay for it" question is used for product design. The model I built was probably around 1500-1800 pieces I'm guessing but will most likely be downsized for production. |

I approve of this statement. I would like to see a frigate from each faction. I even marked which frigates I would like/enjoy building from each and which I think may not be a good idea (from a LEGO standpoint) .
My favorite builds include: Amarr Executioner Caldari Heron and Merlin Gallente Tristan.
My least favorite or improbable from a LEGO standpoint builds include Amarr Crucifier (twice the size of the Rifter) Amarr Inquisitor and Tormentor - just not fun to build Gallente Imicus and Incursus
I'm most excited about minifig scale ships so I'm also looking at shuttles and starter ships. Of course, I'd also love to see some larger ships as well in a smaller scale. |

I was pleasantly surprised to see the Shaun of the Dead model gaining such publicity. Simon Pegg sponsored it on Conan last night so its shot up like 3000 today and yes, just passed the Rifter. But, it thankfully didn't push the Rifter off the front page and it is bringing new attention to the cuusoo site. |

The next LEGO cuusoo project has hit 10K. No, its not EVE - its Shaun of the Dead. They managed to get 9K supporters in less then 3 days.
Now its our turn.
To anyone who doesn't want to sign up and support CCP's efforts to have an official LEGO EVE ship; it makes me sad. If CCP asked you to sign up to a website to vote on the next ship design or vote for your next CSM or get a promotional EVE hat; you'd do it. This is no different. CCP is asking that you take a minute to sign up and support the LEGO EVE project. Please take a minute and do it. And then let your friends and corp mates know. Spread it in chat. Tweet it (like Hilmar did). Facebook it (like CCP did).

The EVE Rifter has slipped to #3 *barely* beating out League of Legends. Keep up the support! |

Yes, 40K is the usual number of people I see online. I do realize that there are 360K regular subscribers (weekly). That just underscores my point. CCP ran a promotional advertisement (with link) on the login screen for like a week. You can't play the game without having seen the advertisement. With 360K subscribers the advertisement yielded a boost to the support on the lego site - but less then 2500 people clicked the link and supported. I'm not complaining as I think it was totally awesome to see that boost but the follow through was very low. Similarly, each time CCP posts it on their facebook page, the support goes up about 200. I am however concerned about next week. At the slower rate we are going, we may get knocked off the top 10. |

We are now 76% of the way to 10K supporters! This also puts us at #1 for the week again. Being in the top ten is extremely important for visibility for LEGO visitors to the site.

The only other project that is beating us (for the week) is My Little Pony which has skyrocketed by about +2500 supporters this week. We are closing in on the number one project - Back to the Future - and also closing in on 10K supporters. Only 1400 more supporters and we are there.

This is amazing. It is Tuesday night and the Rifter is now at 9376 supporters. A couple LEGO blogs are trying to start a race between team EVE and team Back to the Future. The Rifter blew past the BttF project and is now about 200 ahead. 634 more supporters and we've reached our goal. I'm eager to see what happens at that point.
On a very related note I'm happy to say that I've prematurely started my next ship thanks to the current standing of the frigate polls from the community. The Rifter took about 2 weeks to build. This one I'm hoping to finish in a little less time. |

LEGO refused Halo and so MegaBlocks lapped it up greedily. The main reason LEGO denied Shaun of the Dead was for the same reason the movie industry gave it an R rating - it contains content that is adult oriented - language and gorey violence. Its not zombies, or violence in general - LEGO is releasing its own Monsters line with zombies and Indiana Jones and Star Wars has plenty of violence.
So, what about EVE? Well, you can easily argue that it is less violent then Star Wars. There are a lot of ship battles but no person to person killing. I could see Dust straddling the fence of LEGO's ideals but I don't think EVE could - not without a massive bending of reality. You could say the EVE fanbase is immoral or inappropriate for children, but you could say the same thing about Star Wars The Old Republic MMO. In the end they have to base it off the property, not the people who play it.
Ok, granted, I'm nervous too... |

Good news:
I'm well on my way to finishing the next model - the Merlin. The initial hurdles are over and I'd say I'm about 50% done and its going swimmingly. I am surprised that it is actually much harder then the Rifter...

Cuusoo has updated its guidelines to include stricter rules for submissions. One such rule includes "no video game first person shooters". This would mean that Dust514 is out. These guidelines come a day or two after the Firefly Serenity model was rejected due to adult themes that would not fit with the 6-11 year old age group.
In other news, I'm happy to announce that the Merlin is finished. One of the office artists is giving it a photoshop pass (for the nice white background) and then I'll submit it to cuusoo. Cuusoo pre-review process means it'll be up in 72 hours after submission. I'll spread the word once it's ready. I will say this: it was much more complicated than I originally thought it would be. It has so many angles. It makes the Rifter look easy. |

Thank you! Yep I plan to... and to also include the pod I built that can fit a guy. .The pod is actually small enough that it might have a chance of fitting in your Merlin now I think about it. It's roughly 7 studs wide and 10 studs long. Might be too small for Lego figs... but it can still fit one in there. Even if Cuusoo turns it down, I have far plans to build the ship in reality. If you need more pieces, you could always try looking into Bricklink if you haven't already. I plan to start buying like it's the end of the world when the times comes for me to buy parts for my noob ship.
I have purchased pieces on Bricklink occasionally to complete existing sets or sets I buy on ebay that may be missing a piece. The Merlin represents the first time I've ever bought pieces off of Bricklink to finish a non-instruction model. Usually I look for workarounds. I did buy a ton of cheese slopes. |
